Sarah Leavens is writer, teacher, and artist residing in Pittsburgh, PA. A Lecturer in the English Department at the University of Pittsburgh, she teaches composition and professional writing, including grant writing, and tutors in the Writing Center. With a background in nonprofit outreach, nontraditional classroom teaching, and visual art, Leavens also works as a teaching artist specializing in bookbinding, drawing, painting, creative writing, and intersections thereof. Recent workshops include chapbook binding for a literary publishing class, sensory nonfiction and mixed-media mapmaking writing for MFA students, travel writing for arts residents in southern France, and poetry writing for seniors with Alzheimer's/Dementia. Her poetry has appeared in Pretty Owl Poetry, LUNCH, The Diverse Arts Press, Corium, and So to Speak, among other places. Leavens received an MFA in poetry and nonfiction, with concentrations in travel writing and pedagogy, from Chatham University in 2012, and she was the 2012-2013 Out of the Forge Writer-in-Residence in Braddock, PA. Current projects include a full-length poetry manuscript and the launch of an online selling platform for handmade books.
